Urgent help required with SSE address change.

Options
I was told a few months ago that my flat number was incorrect, instead of no. 6 I really should be no. 10. I made all the address changes, however SSE refused to change my number. They raised it as a complaint and after 8 weeks they informed me I had to take it to the Energy Ombudsman.

I informed the Energy Ombudsman, filled out all the forms and never heard anything from them. When I tried to email them, I received no replies, when I send letters in the post, no replies, when I phoned them they tell me someone will be in touch soon.

In the meantime, the old no. 10 never paid their bills to SSE, I found out. I get a lot of hassle from that. My bills after the last incorrect meter reading, are blown out of proportion because the meter readings of the new no. 6 are being jused.

SSE refuses to talk to me because my complaint is with the Energy Ombudsman. I tried Citizen Advice, they can’t help.

This is now on-going for several months and I don’t know what to do next.

  • It sounds pretty ridiculous; why on earth won't they change the address?
(although I'm not sure how a flat number can be wrong?) Do you have any written evidence that the flat number was wrong/changed?

Submit your own meter reading - based on your meter. Pay the bill, then change your energy supplier.

I suspect old 10 and new 6 are probably in a bit of a confused mess - have you tried talking to them in person?
  • Hi,

The flat number has always been no. 10 in the land register. When they were build flat number 6 was put on my door, so I have always used that. I had a few issues with Thames water to get the number change sorted but they did send someone around and it was sorted.

Both old 10 and new 6 are empty at the moment.
I do have written evidence and provided that to SSE but they just don't want to know. They didn't have any problems with taking a large sum of money out of my account. As I result I was overdrawn, paid £35 pounds a day in overdraft fees until my bank closed down my account. Therefore you cant pay any bills other companies start to complain.

The result is in am in major financial difficulties because I am being held hostage by SSE.

I'm afraid, you do not make much sense.

Regardless of what number is written on your front door, there is a meter (with it's own number) connected to your flat and you pay whatever was used according to that meter. Even if the flat number was changed, that would not mean you had used less electricity.
  • You are not the first person who is saying that I don't make much sense. The fact is this is what happened after I asked the SSE to change my address.

The guy who read my meter only wrote down my meter reading on a piece of paper because he was confused.

    Somewhere something has gone wrong.

My main problem is that both the SSE and the energy ombudsman are refusing any communication with me.

I am looking for a suggestion what to do next.

How long ago did you contact the Ombudsman?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • ^email the Daily Mail :)

And given they are charging you for someone else's supply, it's likely to be a valid use of the Direct Debit Guarantee (so can ask bank for refund of the high DD)

In hindsight, you probably should have come here before your account was closed!
  • Thank you for your replies. I have contacted the Ombudsman over 3 months ago. I have also contacted the Daily Mail but I haven't heard anything from them. I must admit that I sent in to their head office because I couldn't find any details on their website.

If someone can provide an email address I can try again.

I just don't know what to do next.

Are you talking to the SSE supplier, if yes you are talking to the wrong people. The meter point address is owned by the distribution company (DNO), I suggest you contact them directly because your supplier cannot make them change an address.
