You can buy N&SI products over the counter at the PO - they are an inhouse product, so to speak. They will just need to see the ID when they sell you the investment - they shouldn't charge you when it's for their own product.

Um no - they don't ask for ID at the PO counter.

NSI do an electronic check when they receive the form and if they are not satisfied with it write to you saying what ID they need.
  • Yes, I'll second that - the lady in the post office that took the application form was fine - she sees us nearly everyday but when it got sent to NS&I they sent a form and requested more ID - certified copies or go without!

I understand the theory but it does make it hard to save your own money - you can get credit cards with out all the trouble it seems? (it's a long while since I had a new credit card so it may have changed since then) but it just seems these days - it's harder sometimes to save than spend :o

I just hope all the trouble stops any bad guys out there from getting away with things they shouldn't :T
This site is just excellent :T

I've asked at my local bank branch (Barclays in my case) twice and they were more happy to certify documents for me free of charge. Even if it was for a competitor...

Natwest will do it for their own products, but not for a competitor.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Thanks for all the reply. I guess I can send my "proof of address" documents but really don't want to send "proof of identity" document via post. Look at the full list of eligible docs the only I possess is the full passport, I do not, and cannot send it over cos I travel quite frequently.

janhanan, do you mean your branch also certified your "proof of identity" doc?
  • Mum had to go to a post office when she re-activated an old account number and bought a new load of Premium Bonds. She needed to take the ID and address stuff as we have moved and she didn't want them to go in the post. All done no problem, after she drove 8 miles to the nearest post office. Old account re-activated and new address verified.

Imagine her surprise when her new premium bond certs (just 10k worth!) were sent to her OLD address - only got them because the mail is on redirect for a year. When she phoned they said it was NOT POSSIBLE that they had gone to the old address as the new address is the only one on their system. Well we had the envelope in our hands. Anyway as row escalated they started writing to us at our new address of Rettend on common in Chester. Despite having our CHELMSFORD postcode (and its Rettendon Common). So they saw mum in person, saw her proof of address, copied it down wrong, got the right postcode but don't have that postcode checking software.

To cut the long story of the row short, we think they now have it all right and they made an ex gratia payment too.

    MUPPETS!
The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j

Please don't send anything anywhere! Please read your letter from NS&I asking for the ID - they ask you not to send originals but get them certified.

You will have to personally take your originals to the post office subpostmaster, or a solicitor, or teacher, doctor etc to have them certify copies of them are real. You then send the certified copies thru the post to NS&I.

Woh that's good advise - I never noticed the second page that stated clearly I should send the certified copy.

BTW, just curious, what's the definition of banker? Is university lecturer counts as teacher as well?
