How many revolutions does one tire make in 17,800 km?

Estimate the correct number and win an adventure in South Africa.

Rainer Zietlow is travelling from Nordkapp in Norway to Cape Agulhas in South Africa. The route is divided into 8 sections of different distances.
Your task: Estimate how many revolutions one of Rainer’s tyres makes during each stage. Rainer drives with the Wrangler HP all weather 275/65R17 115H.
Before the start of the stage:

You can either estimate one stage or do all 8 stages in one go.
As long as the stage has not yet started, you can change your estimation as often as you like. In other words, while stage 3 is under way, you can still change your estimations for stages 4 - 8 – without breaking the rules.
After the start of the stage:

While the stage is under way, you only get one chance to change your estimation. What is also important is the time you change your estimation. Shortly after the start of the stage, your correction window is greater than the one before the end of the stage.
I do it just for fun and whatever I win is a bonus

    Prize details

The first price is 1 journey for 2 people to South Africa (or, for residents of South Africa, to Scandinavia) given to 1 participant guessing or placing the closest bet to the actual amount of times the tire spins throughout the distance. The second prizes are 3 Goodyear-branded Ice Watches given to the top 3 guesses per destination (24 in total). Two separate sets of first prizes and second prizes are available for participants through Goodyear Facebook Application and Dealers’ Microsite. No cash alternative to the prizes will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving any notice. The global ranking rests upon the best five single stages. If a participant has placed more than five guesses, only his best five guesses count and rest upon the global ranking. Only participants who have placed at least five guesses will qualify for winning the first prize (the trip to South Africa or, for residents of South Africa, Scandinavia). Participants having placed less than five guesses are excluded from winning the first prize (the trip to South Africa or, for residents of South Africa, Scandinavia). In the case of a draw, the winner will be the participant who placed his first guess the earliest.

So we need to enter each stage rather than guess the whole total in one go

What is the distance of the first stage ? And then we need someone good at maths lol

What you can do is is enter a guess for each stage now and then go back once they have told you the actual for a stage.

The calculation would be the distance of the stage divided by the circumference of the tyre.

I am rubbish at maths omg!
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T
  • Yep - I'd love to have a go at this but since my last noted exam grade in Maths was an F back in 1970something I don't hold out much hope!
  • From a bit of time on Google, I think from the tire spec "275/65R17":

275 - tire width in mm
65 - aspect ratio (ratio of height to width, with height being the
17 - rim size in inches

    e.g. see here: http://www.4wheelparts.com/images/landing/tirewheelpackage/how_to_read_a_tire.jpg

There is a calculator for the tire diameter here: http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-height-calculator/

Plugging the numbers in you get 30.1 inches, which is 78.99 cm.

The circumference is the diameter x pie = 248.15 cm

    Calculator is here: http://www.onlineconversion.com/circlesolve.htm

Does that look right to people? I don't have a car and know nothing about tires, so might be completely wrong on that bit!
Thanks to all OPs and everyone who helps/posts etc!!:T

Stage 2 was 2.229km which worked out at 930,401 revolutions
Stage 3 was 2.108km which worked out at 1,444,888 revolutions

How can that be, or am I missing something here?
