Automatic Micra wont enter reverse.

I have a nissan micra 1.2 litre automatic 53 reg. The issue i have is that the car wont enter reverse, basically the gear lever is now redundant even when i select P, it is forever in the drive position. All the car does now is drive.

car has been reliable since 2011

Took the car to local garage, they say i need new a gearbox.

Any ideas -- should i try the recondition route.

  • Car is 2003.

The Garage surely could have figured that out. Even gear placed on P doesnt stop the car.

Isn't that the switch on a manual gearbox?

Your fault is more likely with the selector cable & mechanism as it won't go into P

It's got to be either the linkage between selector and box, or something inside the box. Not a lot else, and should be easy and quick for the garage to see if it's the selector linkage.

Quick google suggests the starter inhibitor switch (stops you from starting the car unless in P or N) is in the selector, not on the 'box, so that doesn't help much.

That same quick google also suggests it's an electronic CVT. I foresee a future wrapped around baked beans for this car.

They stopped the CVT with the 2003 models, with the latest body shape, and went back to a proper auto, so the OP might be lucky.

  • The Garage claims it is has a manual gearbox with electronic switch for the automatic ( something like that)

Should i get a second opinion from another garage

So probably not a mechanical fault in the box. Just electronic/computer faults... <shudder>
