Husband off sick?

I have no idea where to post this at all....so it may need moving

My husband has had 5 months off sick with awful work related depression. We have been through around 4 mediation changes, and his GP and therapist are still of the opinion he is not fit to work. However...after 6 months off sick his pay gets cut in half. I am currently unemployed, but desperately jobseeking, but without another income we cannot afford to live (It would be £550 per month...our mortgage alone is £270 per month)

We are currently fighting a bullying case at his work, so obviously he is not only unfit for work but going back could make all this worse...the only option we can think of is to find him another job (with it being workplace related it should clear up if he moves) , but with 6 months off sick that might not happen. Moving jobs where he is is not really an option either, other jobs come with a significant pay drop.

any help or advice welcome!!!

We aren't entitled to anything right now; his regular income puts us just over the threshold for everything (16800 anually).

After 28 weeks when his statutory sick pay comes to an end then he will be able to make a claim to Employment Support Allowance (ESA). He should certainly be entitled to the contributions based allowance. This would be paid in addition to the half pay that he receives from his employer.

I also suspect that you have miscalculated what his take home pay would be whilst on half pay. It is not simply a case of half of his normal take home pay.
Whilst on half pay he would probably pay little or no tax (dependant on the amount of any ESA received) and also only a minimal amount of national insurance contributions.

Don't panic about your finances. With half pay from work and ESA he is likely to have around £950 per month minimum coming in.

You can apply now for JSA Conts based

He can apply for ESA IR (this automatically includes ESA C) when his statutory sick pay is finished. He will need an SSP1 from the employer and sicknotes from doctor from the date the SSP finishes....
  • He has physical and mental health problems so he is feeling very anxious about attending the interview, but knows that he has to.
