You can't do this with firstdirect; their system recognises that you're trying to pay a credit card (or other known bill/utility) and insists that you choose the company from a list. This list included "Halifax Clarity" and "Halifax Mastercard" when I last used it. I made the obvious choice - Clarity, and the payment failed.

This was 2 years ago. Their system may have changed since then?

Unfortunately it hasn't - which is ridiculous in this day and age. It is one of my bug bears with FD. For me, I had to choose "Halifax C/C" from the payments list to make my payment.
  • Same with HSBC ,I did try that but if you try and set it up yourself , it gives you a message telling you to use the list of credit cards they offer --
  • So , a possible answer? With telephone banking , HSBC put Halifax Clarity on my payments list without a problem , and made the urgent payment I required . Their answer to my query as to why I hadnt been able to carry this out myself online , was that I should have cleared my cache first. Im no techy, so is this a feasible /likely reason ?

I don't think so. "Clear cookies and cache" is a favourite fobbing off of all CS agents that know nothing about IT. They are taught to say this if they don't know the answer.

I don't think so either. It would be a very poor system if a user's cookie could cause a payment to fail.
  • Arrrrgh! I suspected that might be the case , but I wont know until I try and set up a new payment for a different firm on their list.
Now Clarity card has been set up by HSBC themselves on my account , at least I shouldnt have any trouble paying Halifax's future monthly bills. Thanks all.
