check a website/company for me pls [lightsmart.co.uk]

My parents would like to buy this product from https://www.lightsmart.co.uk

http://www.lightsmart.co.uk/italian-designer-bronze-chandelier-with-fifteen-lights..html

Now it has no makers name and the skeptic in me is thinking what's stopping them having these made for themselves in China and passing them off?

Anyway my parents are adamant so i just want to make sure these people are reliable and not dodgy in anyway.

I'm going to do my own snooping now but would appreciate any feedback. :)

I will tell them to pay on credit card for easy resolution in the event of problems with the company or product.

Thx.

  • To be honest, I would be very surprised to find that these lights were not manufactured in China, Taiwan or somewhere similar.

Even if this is the case, the retailer is doing nothing wrong as the advert doesn't state that they are manufactured in Italy, simply that they are "ITALIAN DESIGN AND BEAUTY FROM ITALY"
If they were designed in Italy or designed elsewhere by an Italian then they will match the description.

It's a bit like when you see a Heston Blumenthal ready meal in Waitrose. (other chefs and supermarkets are available)
He didn't cook the meal and I doubt if he's even seen the place where it was prepared, yet it can still be called a Heston curry or whatever meal it is.

It's definately a good idea to pay by way of a credit card and once the fitting is delivered, make sure thet it gets a very good looking at before installation and keep hold of all of the packing until you are 100% sure that it's okay.

Google Street View shows the contact address to be that of a central heating installer.

    http://www.allaspectsuk.co.uk/contact.asp

However the VAT number checks out on the European Commission's website where the address is given as the rear of 1559 Stratford Road. I rechecked the road at the back and there is a small building which could be used for storage.

    http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/

The Domain Registration gives the address as 1502 Stratford Road.

    http://whois.domaintools.com/lightsmart.co.uk

That is a franchised kitchen fitters shop which doesn't appear to have any connection with Lightsmart.

I couldn't find a phone number. They don't have to provide one by law but any reputable website would as a matter of courtesy and good customer service.

The buying process is SSL encrypted which is a good sign but Lightsmart weren't using a payment processor which I found unusual but perhaps they process their own payments.

I'm not saying it's a scam website. It may well be perfectly ok but it strikes me as being run by somebody who is either very amateurish or rather secretive.

thank you all they read through your posts and won't be going ahead but they are a bit gutted because they fell in love with them and it doesn't seem like this is a product sold elsewhere, at least i'd struggle to find it without a manufacturers name.

Any reputable lighting companies you can all recommend?

    Found it!
    http://www.lighting-retailer.co.uk/jh-miller-windsor-range-ceiling-light-15-light-bronze-finish-with-amber-glass

it's a jh Miller in the windsor range so now we can find it from a reputable place. D:
  • I know nothing about lighting :p I can spot an iffy website/company though and that's enough to make me want to investigate until I work out what the problem is lol I know my way around company/director records pretty well

https://plus.google.com/+KeslightingCoUk/about?hl=en sells the brand at least and has positive reviews and a showroom

if they are set on the design, they might as well get it direct from http://www.jhmiller.co.uk/contact (the website isn't that swish, but there is less risk than going through another store - perhaps apart from unless you can find a showroom that will let you take away the same day)

I would advise you not to buy from that website. The main reason is because the SSL encryption on the check out page is broken. This means that any sensitive personal information which is entered including credit card numbers can be intercepted.

As for the contact address, there doesn't appear to be a Musk Lane Industrial Estate although Google Street View does show a small group of commercial buildings on Musk Lane. In addition the Domain has been registered to a non-trading individual which is obviously a lie.

This website looks safe, they have the same product and it's cheaper:

    http://www.keslighting.co.uk/jh-miller-windsor-15-light-ceiling-pendant-1045-15.html

The bulbs aren't included but you can get them elsewhere like Argos for example.

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4328764.htm

The contact address checks out on Street View, the phone number has a Coventry prefix, the Domain Registration has the correct details on it and the SSL encryption on the check out page is working as it should do.
