NEXT automatically gave me an account

i ordered a couple of bits from NEXT last month, paid by debit card and got them delivered, 2-3 weeks later i received a welcome pack and details on my new NEXT account, something i do not need, or want, with a £300 limit. I'm currently closing down all credit cards/accounts to tidy up my finances, as i do not need credit, can NEXT do this? As im sure it will show up on my credit file as a new account?

Bit confused :(

Shopping with Next using a Credit or Debit Card

Customers without a Next Directory Flexible Account can pay for items as they are ordered by credit or debit card, eVoucher or gift card. Before you shop we will make searches about you at credit reference agencies who will supply us with credit information, as well as information from the Electoral Register. The agencies will record details of the search, which can be seen by you and Next on your credit file, whether or not credit is granted. If we are unable to offer credit the credit reference agencies will also record a search which will be seen by other lenders. If we are able to offer you credit but you decide to pay by card the credit reference agency will record a quotation search, which can only be seen by you and Next and not by any potential lender. The remainder of the terms and conditions set out below will then apply.
  • I fell for this trap the other week, and as soon as the account was opened I made a very angry phone call to Next. As it was within 14 days they said they could undo everything, so there'd be no credit check (although it was only an ID check when I looked), and no record of the account.

If you try and contact them saying you never wanted to open an account, they might be able to close it down and remove any record of it.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

    Thanks people

Oh, and cool name britishbloke :)
  • NEXT are noted for this problem. The mistake is to give them your DoB, but I guess the problem is you can't shop with them unless you divulge it - so don't shop with them. Why the hell you can't just pay be CC or DC and have done with it is beyond me. In effect they are trapping people into credit which they don't need or don't want. Disgusting behaviour.

Yep, when you see the APR, you can see why they do it...

Next are not unique with this. Very do the same.

My daughter paid for a Very purchase with a credit card. The next letter she got congratulated her on her £300 credit limit with Very. Limit has subsequently crept up to £1500 with no further purchases made.

It is all in the small print, but makes me

And also see the threads here about Very and their underhand dealings concerning delivery charges, which in some cases have led to the besmirching of people's credit records through no fault of their own. Very: another company to avoid like the plague.
