Praise: Amazon - at last an update that does things I want

Having been suffering, along with everyone else, from a never ending stream of announcements of pointless updates that don't really make anything work better or more usefully (e.g. new phones without the one thing everyone asks for: longer battery life), I was delighted to see that Amazon have brought out a new kindle that actually has virtually all the features I wanted (and that on a device I found damn near perfect to start with).

1) Flush bezel. (less dust and it looks cool)
2) Return of page turning buttons. (too easy to get miss-turns with on screen)
3) Higher resolution. (always nice and they are now at the limit of what people with normal vision can resolve at the distance you generally hold an ebook)
4) Lighter and thinner. (the paper-white got thicker and heavier than the original. This version is thinner and lighter than even the original)
5) You can now share book with your family. (it was always annoying when you had to pay very nearly the same price for an ebook as for a hard copy and then couldn't lend it of give it away.)

The only thing they didn't do was return to the nice grey finish of the original that didn't show fingerprints and smudges to anywhere near the extent of later models - still, you can't have everything.

So, well done Amazon for the Voyager!

  • This sounds great. I have a very old Kindle with an attached keyboard which prompted somebody to ask me 'what was stuck on the end of your Kindle' the other day . Do you know if this ability to share books with family only applies to this new one or is it retrospective?

From what I can tell from the web site it will apply to all Kindles :T , although it says coming soon, with no time frame :(

I have £50 in Waterstones vouchers that I have been waiting to use for kindle books. Waterstones selling kindle machines not unreasonable that you might think they would sell the books on their website.

    Obviously it is.

When I first asked, I was told 2013 (in late 2012), I asked a few times in 2013, no timeframe.

Asked at the beginning of this year, no - we won't be doing them.

Had to buy "proper" books very often now.
