I'm yet to find anyone that does not accept my amex card... well apart from baskin robbins

Amex is only really a problem outside major cities. Most places in London will accept it, but if you live a bit out in the sticks (like me) you'll find that many smaller retailers won't take it.

Thanks for the replies. I have gone for the amex £25 card with £20 quidco. I have noticed afterwards that some places I shop don't take amex! I can try it for a year and can always cancel it.

Just need to decide on a backup credit card where santander and amex cashback isn't applicable.

    Thanks again for the replies.

The thing with Amex, is it's not widely accepted.

Also if you don't spend £3k in the year you won't get any cashback

I use combination of Costco Amex ( no extra fee , 1-3 % cashback mainly in costco and restaurants , and CapOne luma(4% but restricted spend so mainly petrol ) original tesco MasterCard ( more points than current) and Santander zero for overseas ( no levy/ but no cashback :(.

Although most spending on cashback debit card ( 5%) and discounted gift cards (5-15%)

The Capital One Classic Extra and Nationwide Select credit card both give you 0.5% cashback. I think that's the most you're going to get on a non fee paying Visa/Mastercard. But the Classic Extra doesn't require an account and also pays £10 a year if you make all your payments on time.

just keep the Amex, ensuring you spend £3000+, and have another card alongside.

    Hi,

Another question to ask is that with the santander 123 credit card, i have noticed that i can add additional cardholders. So would the additional card holders have their own limits on the cash back (i.e. would the limit be £600 per month on fuel, £300 for each card)?

It's an account-wide limit IIRC. Additional cardholders don't get their own statements and own payments etc, it all gets billed to the main account holder.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

    I work as a authority. typically i'm paid on a 1099, typically on a w-2. i'm presently acting on a 1099 therefore i'm self utilized.

I am considering shopping for a vehicle for my business. I had many tax questions:

    1) What would be the distinction in deduction between shopping for a "heavy" vehicle and a standard vehicle? As I know it, a neighborhood 179 deduction would prime out at around $11k on a standard vehicle vs $25k for a "heavy" vehicle.

    2) If i'm not freelance next year, is there some reasonably recapture on the section 179 deduction? What defines "self-employed"? I mean, if i'm paid on a W-2 and don't have any 1099 financial gain, cannot I contemplate the business still operational despite the fact that I had no work? i'm attempting to assess the implication of the 179 deduction relative to the current because it is unlikely i will be able to have 1099 financial gain next year.
