my dad has a new stills camera that also shoots video. it is a sony DSC-H400. it can shoot hd video but there is no mention anywhere in the instructions regarding connecting it to a hd tv so that he can watch any hd video he makes. it only mentions connecting to a sd tv via an av cable. how is he supposed to watch hd video he records on the camera? wont a usb to hdmi cable work with this camera for viewing on a hd tv?
he already has one of those cables with his hd camcorder.

HDMI is a better quality link but I don't think its needed for HD picture quality.0

Some cameras can be connected to a TV by HDMI. If they can be it will say somewhere in the documentation.
You can't just connect a USB port to a HDMI port and expect something to work.0 -
i have found that the fitting on the camera end for the hdmi cable of the camcorder is slightly bigger so thats a no. there must be some way that the video can be watched in hd on the tv. i'm just speculating but could it be done with the usb cable that was included because there are usb slots on the tv.
the instructions for the camera only mentioned connecting to a sd tv using an av cable. correct me if i'm wrong but i dont think you can get hd through av cables.0 -
I've had a look at the manual and the accessories available but can't see any sign of an HD output for a TV. If the TV supported the the camera's USB interface and video codec it may be able to play the video files similar to putting a USB stick in with video files. However this is very hit and miss as the support the TV's offer is usually limited although there's no harm in trying.

No just a bog standard av output on this camera. Does the TV have a sd card reader at all, if not can get medi hub that plugs into TV with hdmi cable and slot the sd card into the hub to play back.
but better of just using the supplied cable, seeing the specs of the camera show that is record VGA only in video mode, assuming this is the right camera.

the camera does record video at 720p. would this video be viewable on the tv if it was connected with the usb cable?0 -
IIRC some HD cameras have a mini HDMI type connector to allow it to hook up to a TV, I know my 4 year old Panasonic camera has one, but I've never used it as I don't have the right cable.
You need to read the manuals, as I very much doubt it would do anything useful if connected to the TV via a USB cable (and you could damage one or other if you try using a usb cable).0 -
