I can't send onetel emails. Apparently it is because my ISP (virgin) won't send non- virgin emails.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks for your responses. I am going to ring Plusnet tomorrow who are my broadband provider to see if they can help. I followed the onetel instructions and it is just not happening.SallyD0

It may well be that the onetel mail server won't accept smtp connections from other ISPs. Can't you send them through Plusnet? i.e use relay.plus.net as your outgoing mail server.0

The SMTP servers operated by ISPs typically only accept connections from customers connected using that ISP, so to use the onetel server you have to get your internet connection from onetel.
This is correct behaviour and there is a very good reason why they do this. If you are interested, put "open mail relay" into your search engine of choice and read.
To send email you have two choices:
1. Get your internet connection from onetel instead of plusnet. You will not then need to change the settings in your email software.
2. Relay through Plusnet's SMTP server. You will need to change your SMTP server in your email software to be the one that Plusnet provide.

I have two onetel email accounts which still work, lord knows why as I left them about 7 years ago!
I am with plusnet and use the above method which works fine0 -

Thank you, I left Onetel years ago but have always kept the email address. I do have a Plusnet email but have never used it. I am able to send and receive via gmail on my tablet. I will try the plusnet settings myself, if no joy will get my grand-daughter on the case.SallyD0 -

SMTP servers can use username/password authentication for access, rather than relying on the IP address matching one belonging to the ISP. The other thing they can implement is "POP before SMTP", so if the users has made a POP3 connection to get their mail they allow SMTP connections to send mail thereafter from the same address. for some period (not sure if anyone still uses this method, but yahoo did about 15 years ago)
Generally, relaying through the ISP's SMTP server is the simplest solution.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Is this a recent problem, or have you never been able to send emails through them?0
