Most people use their phones as portable music players these days. What's the reason for getting a separate standalone player? What sort of situations do you expect he/she would use it?0

Mp3 player not popular anymore as most people use their phone.
Are u looking for something small and cheap that use it when doing sports? Or some expensive audiophile music player?0 -
If you want small and cheap, I quite like the sansa sandisk - I find it easier to use than the ipod which is having a hissy fit with its playlists. Basic and portable if you don't want to carry a phone around. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Another vote for the Sandisk Sansa Clip+ and a big micro SD card here.
Stores loads of music, good battery life, basic effective operating software, you can manage it straight from the File Manager on your computer, without installing special software. Great little device.
The standard headphones are ok but pairing it with a pair of good quality headphones will also improve the quality no-end.

Crikey. Doesn't anyone go on holiday without their phone anymore, and listen to music?
Is it really so hard to imagine someone wanting to listen to music where phones aren't allowed? A library, for instance? A hospital?0 -

smart phone have flight mode.
Library, turn it to no sound no vibrate.
Hospital, i assume flight mode will do.
The time i still use mp3 player these day are the quality of music from my phone is not good enough. I can hear the different when i play flac/ ape in mp3 player or phone. But these music player would probably cost smothing like 150
Or when I go to gym, I need a tiny one/ clip one0 -
As a family we've had all sorts of MP3 players over the years some OK some were rubbish. In the end I bought an iPod and for me it's the best of the lot.
I've had three now, my first was an early one that now sits in the glove box of my daughters car and is connected to her iPod enabled radio. My second was an 80GB iPod Classic that is now permanently in my car and connected to the radio, no more CDs and loads of choice.
I have a 160GB iPod Classic for everywhere else. I wouldn't be without it but I have to say I'm not keen on the newer iPod, the one that looks like a phone with a large screen and loads of apps. I prefer something that does music well rather than something that tries to be more and ends up being over complicated. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
thanks for the replies. he really only wants it to use when we are away on holidays on the beach or a round the pool. so dont want to spent too much but dont want tat either.
also, the last time i checked there hadn't been a law made that means you have to use a mobile for absolutly everything.
it's nice to be different.
will look into the sandisk.SPC 0370 -
Well, know we know why you want a standalone player.
Yes, get a Sandisk.0 -
Another vote here for the Sandisk Sansa...
