Trying to save money on copy of Birth Certificate

Hi

My Mrs has lost her birth certificate which I need in order to update her driving license so that the local council can perform money laundering checks on us as we wish to buy our home using RTB.

The standard charge online is £9.25 and takes 15 working days to arrive which seems a very long time.
I can get one next day for £23.40 which is crazy.

Being a bit of a scrooge is there a cheaper way yet fast way to get a copy of the certificate ???

Thanks

  • Do you live in the area in which she was born? Not sure whether you'd be able to go to the local office and get a copy. Might be worth enquriing.

  • Yes I do.

That is what I was thinking to do but just curious as to whether someone on here had done this recently and could confirm the process.

I'm in Devon and found the website listing the fees a tad confusing. I'm not sure which certificate to order. DVLA can take a few weeks to process a license and time is of the essence.

You need the one in bold.

It would be worth phoning up and seeing if you can collect it.
  • Thanks.

I'll give them a ring in the morning. Feel better now I know what to ask for.

As short and long are the same price (£10) I'd get the long one anyway as it gives more info which might be useful later even if not needed now.
  • Placed my order for the long type which was £10 with the option of paying £1 for first class post.

Should get it by the end of the week with any luck and saved myself a nice bit of cash. £12.40.

Thanks for all of the good advice. Can't believe how quick the replies were. Will definately use this forum for other money matters.
