Hi, first time posting on this forum and am having a bit of a dilemma and can’t find the answer anywhere on google. I have a credit card for about two years and can’t get credit at the moment so I have checked my credit file to find that I have 1 missed payment, the first payment after the payment free period now I have checked my bank account and there is no payment showing that’s bounced etc... so my question is can I apply and receive a credit card without setting up a direct debit because that’s what they are saying but I remember giving these details when I applied. Also is there anyway of proving that I did give details.

Thanks, any help would be great.

  • You should really have checked that the direct debit was correctly set up. Normally when you open a new credit card it asks you whether you want to set up a direct debit or not. If you did, you would have been sent a direct debit mandate in the post.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

I've never heard of "payment free period" for a CC. If you did ask them to take payments by a DD and they failed, contact them and ask to clean your credit file. That said, if it was the first payment soon after getting the CC, often they don't have enough time to set the DD and it's your responsibility to make the payment by other means in this case.

Yes, you can apply for a CC without setting a DD, but a DD is the simplest and the most reliable option. Usually you can see if the DD was set up in your CC online account and in your bank online account. Also, your CC statements always say if the payment will be taken by a DD.
