  • I always went for Rock (salmon) & Chips.

Odd as it is neither rocky nor is it a salmon.....
I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.

    What do I want?

Faced with the choice above, I'd go for the battered cod or haddock - cooked fresh as I order. smiley-rolleyes010.gif

My local chippy provides a decent amount of chips and a carton of mushy peas is adequate for my requirements.

I even have plates, knives & forks in my house.
Not to mention a table and chairs.
    Yes, really.
And there's no hole in my roof so the environment I eat my haddock or cod in is nice, dry and warm.
In fact it's probably far nicer and far more comfortable than a Crown Carvery.

And that's perfectly OK and your choice.

But in taking that decision you're parting with around twice the amount of cash than the Crown Carvery diner for a very similar, if not somewhat smaller meal ...

... with the fish COOKED FRESH when ordered just the same ...

... and NOT all the time MIGHT you be taking a chippy fish supper back to the place that you reside in.

Anyway, the question was actually posed to the op, Robertelee

No, not a very similar or smaller meal at all - at least not where I live.

You may not consider it very MSE, but I'd rather pay for a decent sized, freshly cooked cod or haddock.

I think a lot of it depends on how this particular fish is sourced. Some may be fine - but a lot of it isn't.

In my wife's case she was advised by her consultant never to eat it again for fear of an even more serious reaction - possibly fatal.

With that advice, you don't take chances. I'm guessing he knew what he was talking about.

Me too, although it's getting harder and harder to get nowdays. I'd rather go without than eat cod or haddock.

So your wife is allergic to it. Other people are similarly allergic to shellfish, finned fish, oily fish, white fish or scaly fish, all can cause anaphylaxis. This is not related to how the fish is sourced, it is an allergy to the type of fish and being allergic to one type does not mean you are allergic to all.

The consultant - an expert in this field - concluded that the problem was related specifically to the fish we are discussing here - Pangasius. Also commonly called River Cobbler and Basa.

His view was that the toxins might be present in one fish, but not necessarily all, depending on source. This fish is a common source of problems - far, far more than the Haddock and Cod which it is replacing.

If we are comparing Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas then the only specific difference in the content is the type of fish.
The fish is fried fresh upon request just the same.
A fish supper of Haddock, chips and mushy peas is obviously a "very similar meal" to Cod, chips and mushy peas! Or do you disagree ?

As for it being smaller it was you who said regarding your chippy that the "amount of chips and a carton of mushy peas is adequate for my requirements"
That may be the case but given that a CC diner can have an UNLIMITED AMOUNT of chips AND mushy peas (AND Baked Beans if they so required) then those people who could eat any quantity that exceeds "your" portion of chips and mushy peas must by definition be having a larger meal than yours, be it by 10%, 100% or 500%
If YOU fancy EXTRA mushy peas one evening then it's another or larger carton at a further cost.

Personally I'd sooner pay for fillet steak and frequently do.

These all your friends that sleep on park benches, in shop doorways on the High Street and behind the recycling bins in car parks, in cardboard boxes and under piles of newspapers .....

... that come to your rescue with crockery, cutlery and furniture ...

.. when you're in these locations and have an open fish supper in your hands?

Anyone can reply to any post and many have done so, that IS the point  ...

.. BUT it was the OP that raised the issue of "Crown Carveries" "doing a deal" on "Fish and Chips" and the apparent surprise, alarm and disgust upon discovering that IT WASN'T  Cod or Haddock given that the cost of this ENTIRE very cheap meal (that I presume the OP was specifically looking for - CHEAP that is) was significantly (20% to 25%) LESS than the cost of JUST a FISH from a street chippy, especially when considering ALL the EXTRAS that are included (as opposed to a couple of sheets of paper and a piece of wood).

And before anyone accuses me, I have absolutely NO CONNECTION with CC other than having eaten in a couple of their establishments on a few occasions.
