What do you look for, to know if the decorating has been done well?

I imagine most decorating jobs look well done on first inspection.

However, what are the details that one needs to look for, to see if they've really been done well?

  • A lot of decorating is with the 5 P's .... Proper preparation prevents P*ss-poor performance....so its obviously the time taken to do the 'underneath' work which will reflect on the final coats.

also neatness, attention to detail, a fair price for a fair job....
how many teas does he drinks, does he scoff too many biscuits etc !!

Do people who keep giraffes have high overheads ?

    Useful.

Yes, it reminds me that the quality is all in the preparation.

I think I shall request a breakdown of what they're going to do to prepare the walls.

Currently no biscuits in the house!
Only tins of herrings in tomato sauce (we haven't moved in yet) - he can have em all!

You need to look for clarity of cutting in between different surfaces such as wall and ceiling and walls and timber work. Check that there is consistency of colour on all surfaces. Check for run marks or snag marks in gloss work. Ensure sanding and filling has been done properly and feathered in properly. There should be no stain marks coming through emulsions.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • If it's painting then absence of brush strokes and there shouldn't be any drips or overpaint on the skirting.

If it's wall paper, how closely does the pattern match, you shouldn't be able to notice where the paper joins, how neat are the edges paper can tear if you try to rush or use a blunt blade.

It's in the title, it's decoration, it's designed to look good. If it doesn't it's been done poorly.

    Or so they told me.

Never gave that a second thought to be honest.
