You can get an approximately comparable 40 inch Samsung 5000 series TV for about £320-£340 now, or a 5500 series smart TV with the various bells and whistles for around £400.
Leaving aside the inter-manufacture rivalry of different panels/construction quality these are both TVs with perfectly good panels which are better than your old M8 in every quantifiable way and the construction quality of them both is top notch.
For the VGA input on your old TV, if updating your PC's graphics card with a modern output really isn't an option, pretty much every modern TV comes with component inputs still, and a VGA-Component adaptor set is generally between £1 and £2.
I would say being offered 75% of the cost of a comparable non-smart or 62% of the cost of a smart TV to replace an old set you've had the use of for 6 years isn't doing too badly at all, assuming you don't have a new for old policy.0 -
We spent over £1,000 for a Samsung about 8 years ago and have recently replaced with better spec for under £400 (not a smart tv but the original one wasn't either)
You should be able to pick up a replacement on ebay for around £150 if you are wanting to stick with the same model0
