What makes a home 'homely'?

Options
Do any of you money savvy people have tips on how I can make my 3 bed semi a bit more 'homely'? In particular, the dining room and bedrooms feel clinical and cold.

You don't want clutter, just a few 'nice' things.
Maybe candles or plants. Perhaps a dog.
I haven't got a real dog but i've got 2 realistic looking ones. One at the foot of the stairs and the other sitting on the back of the couch.

  • Bedrooms - soft furnishings (eg cushions) ; pictures ; candles ; attention to window dressing etc

Dining Room - family photo's (not too many :)) ; candles : pictures etc.

    Mirrors, can also help :)

Everyones idea is different. My SIL's home looks like a showroom set.

Ask her for a pen and notepad and she scurry's off upstairs to the cupboard where almost everything is kept.
Takes a good 10 minutes to come back with a pen and notepad.

I like things to be close to hand. Although i do annoy myself when i had to stop a job halfway through and need something i have been using and left in that position.

I maybe buikding something in the shed that will take weeks to complete. So i leave the drill and sander there. Then i require one or the other.

comfortable furniture and turn up the thermostat ?

I think those are most important things for comfort & homeliness.
  • Soft lighting. I hate when people just use the main 80w ceiling light. Use lamps and soft lightbulbs!
