wrong fuel (Petrol in a diesel tank)
hi..
im looking for some advice (hope im in the rite place ) I recently did a mistake and add 3.5 l litres of unleaded petrol over approx. 8 liter of diesel in my 2006 2.0 diesel X Type Jaguar Estate...
lucky me i have realise in time and i didt start the engine... but
because i wast near home and was rain .. i have full up my tank with other 52 liter of diesel and drove for next 7 mile...
my question is, is there any risk at this time to damage anything? if i will keep the tank full up for next 500 miles will that help?
or what will be best to do next ?
i really appreciate.

No, if you brimmed it with diesel that should be fine. Keep an ear out for any rough running, but you've done the sensible thing. Less than 5L = Brim with correct fuel and drive on. More than 5L = Drain tank.
It would probably be wise as you say to re-fill the tank at half full to really dilute the remaining petrol down.
It'll be fine, don't sweat it.0 -
cheers for the relief mate...0

I'd go with what Nev says as well.0
-
Is this the rule the other way round... putting less than 5 litres diesel in a petrol car then brimming with petrol?0
-
Third what Nev says, did similar myself to MIL's car, lasted many years after, never did tell her.:(I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Fourth what Nev said
A small amount of petrol in a diesel won't hurt - in the olden days it was common practice to deliberately add some petrol in winter to stop the diesel turning to jelly.
Regarding the other way round, i.e. putting diesel in a petrol engine - a small amount won't hurt, though it'll run a bit rough. You're actually a lot safer in this scenario - too much diesel, and the engine just won't run, it's very rare for any damage to be caused. But petrol in a diesel will muck up the injector pump; diesel is in itself a lubricant, and the pump needs the lubrication. Petrol will dissolve the lubricant, in just the same way that you can use petrol to clean up oily engine parts in your garage ( yes, I know you shouldn't, it's explosive, etc. etc., but's it's bloomin' effective ! )0 -
Isn't it pretty difficult to do it the other way round in most modern cars. I thought a diesel pump nozzle wouldn't fit a petrol filler?0
-
That doesn't stop people, I know someone that filled her scooter with diesel.
"It took me ages to fill it up, I had to dribble it in because the nozzle wouldn't fit"
Doh!0 -
I did the same thing a while back - stuck about 5L of petrol in my Volvo V40. No only did it not do any harm but the car never ran so well :-))0

when the car is parked up the petrol will float to the top of the diesel tank, when you start driving again it will start to mix in again and will slowly be dispersed into the diesel fuel
the fact that petrol floats on top of the diesel it will keep it away from the fuel pick up point in the tank and it will eventually mixed in with the diesel and used up
for such a small amount i would run it down to half a tank top up and then do the same thing again, if you had put in more than 10% petrol in a diesel tank then i would look at having it drained0
