When is a warranty NOT a warranty..........

.....when it's a HOTPOINT tumble dryer !!!!!

Bought a Hotpoint TD from Tesco's 5 months ago, suddenly the mechanical countdown clock started to become stiff and wont move as smoothly as before.

I rang HP to be told that knobs, buttons, switches (basically anything that moves and can be touched by the user on the machine ) are NOT covered by the warranty !!

They tried to sell me a DomGen warranty in case the engineer who inspects it cries "user error"......???

Failure after 5 months of light use....pathetic

The warranty being above your consumer rights is whatever the company says it is.

If you want to use your consumer right you need to go to Tesco.

Or course Tesco would rather you did not which is probably why you are in this situation.

As said above, any warranty offered is above and beyond your statutory rights and as such they can impose restrictions. To be extreme, if Hotpoint say you can only lodge warranty claims on Christmas Day between 1.01am and 1.02am while hopping on your left leg, then they can do this.

Have a read of some of the consumer articles on this site, and if you haven't already, get in touch with Tesco.

As above, contact Tesco. DON'T let them try to fob you off to Hotpoint, remind them that your Consumer Rights under the Sale of Goods Act are with Tesco and not with Hotpoint.

The key point is ... within the first 6 months it is for the supplier to prove that any fault is NOT inherent* ... after 6 months the supplier can require the consumer to prove that any fault IS inherent. So don't waste time - get on to Tesco now.

    * Inherent means "present at the time of sale but not necessarily apparent". For example a solder joint on a circuit board going dry and affecting product function after a period of time, but was OK at first.
