Backpacker Insurance

I'm going travelling to Australia for a year and I'm getting really confused about what sort of insurance I require and where to purchase it from, would anybody be able to help?
I will be potentially working as a fruit picker at some point as well as participating in activities like surfing and paddle boarding.

You have answered your own question really. It is a backpacker, long stay Travel Insurance. You need to speak to companies to advise what you intend doing, so they can quote on the correct basis. Don't be tempted to just buy a standard policy and hope it will be ok. When you are 10,000 miles away, you don't want to find out you were not covered for an activity you were doing.

One company that has specialised in this area for a very long time is STA Travel Insurance. I think they even have branches in Australia.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

I did this (with the working holiday visa scheme) and trip was done via Bunac who offer insurance (through Endsleigh) tailored for the working holiday e.g. no limitations on how many days you can work per year etc

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
