Struggling to get to college.

Options
I'm a student but in receipt of JSA. I have to travel 60 miles two days per week to get to college. The college will only provide a free bus pass after the 15th of September, so I've paying my own way and it has been a damned struggle.

Now the college has told me that they cannot give me a free pass unless they see my loan has been confirmed and granted. The trouble is because the course was axed at one college at the start of this month, the loan had to be re-applied just in time for me to start a new course at another college several days later. Now, they've given me the wrong code to apply for the loan and I've had to wait almost a week for the new code to work. Now that the code has worked I am expected to wait yet again and I've not had the chance to buy a stamp or letter to post the damn thing. I cannot afford to go to college at this rate and there's no help for me. I think I might have used some of my rent to pay for the bus fares.

That's not good.

  • 60 miles? That is one hell of a way...Was there not a college closer to you? What course are you doing?

If you keep all your bus tickets/receipts then hopefully your college will refund you if you press them. But I know that will not help the situation right now.

Is there not an emergency bus pass they can give you? I would recommend going to speak to student services and telling them what you have told us and seeing how they can help.

    best wishes.

It should have been at Leigh, but they axed it. I enquired at Openshaw, but there were no places left.

College won't refund them and they cannot give out emergency bus passes without confirmation of student loan.

is there a student welfare officer who can intercede in cases of extreme hardship?
how is the jobhunting going BTW?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

No. There's only a "guidance team" to oversee who gets what, and there are eight thousand students already applying for hardship.
