Advice Needed - Student with no income and no home

Options
So my partner has recently started attending college to get his life back on track after being made homeless and living in a housing association.

He's 19 and because he's not under 18, he doesn't qualify for any housing benefit. At the moment he's sofa surfing while he's attending college to get by and I feed him. I'm a student too but I'm in uni accommodation and I get fined if he stays over to much so he can't come live with me.

I was hoping someone on here would know of some kind of benefit for homeless over 18 students, or possibly a charity he can go to. I'm in Sheffield and he's in the Sheffield general area, obviously sofa surfing he gets about.
He is looking for a part time job, but that wont cover rent and living expenses as due to college he wont be able to get enough hours.

We don't like taking money off people so any kind of donation page is really a absolute last resort.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and if you have any ideas we'd love to hear from you!! :D

:) Been here for a long time and don't often post
  • I do seriously recommend getting in touch with shelter, and also the CAB to see what they can do for him. I don't like to think that they will turn someone away in his situation.

I wish you both the best of luck, keep us updated.
  • sorry to hear of your situation, it sounds very tough.

If he's looking for part time employment that's really flexible it may be worth looking for work as a 'casual' in hospitality type work.

I used to work in a football stadium through a hospitality company and shifts were when you wanted them, was just above minimum wages and shifts were usually 8 hours on a 0 hours contract.

From what I recall, the interview process was really easy (dress smart) and once you're on their books they would send a mass text message to their 200+ employees and see if anyone wanted to work the shifts on that weekend. Which was great because if you were busy, you just didn't reply.

You could work on the kiosk serving fast food or in hospitality as a waitress and although it was hard work, it paid fairly well and may offer the type of flexibility from a job that he needs.

of course this post is only really useful if you live near somewhere which has a stadium, if not what about a cafe or bar job?

Wish you both all the best!
