It is almost unknown. The RK invariably remains the lease company, who receive and process tickets/VED renewals etc. If it isn't the lease company, it's the employer. It would NEVER be the actual end user.

No it isn't. No lease company in the right mind would declare themselves RK, thus creating unnecessary and significant administrative liabilities, making sure it's taxed, tested, handling tickets etc etc.
Many companies will declare themselves RK to handle their cars internally, but putting the RK as the staff member where it's only got one permanent driver with private use is certainly not uncommon - especially as you rise ranks and get those extra perks.
  • Whooa - didn't mean to open such a can of worms ! Just speaking from experience; a good friend of mine was a sales rep, company car, he was the RK, as such any tickets or whatever were his responsibility. The company were the owners, and sorted out tax, insurance, servicing etc. I don't know the ins and outs of how it worked - looks like different companies have different operating models.

I was just trying to illustrate the point to the OP that "legal owner" and "registered keeper" can legally be different people, and in this particular case it may be hard to prove. In response to other posters, yes I agree the insurance route may be a good avenue to explore - i.e. who would the insurance pay in the event of a claim. And to reiterate - if the son takes the car without father's permission, he *MAY* find himself in trouble. As previous posters have said, not enough info to make an informed suggestion.
  • Thank you, everyone, you've been a great help.

Actually it's quite common. Being the RK means that parking tickets etc would be sent direct to the sales rep. This is also true on long term leases.
    Just not true!

Sales reps do not get named as RK! And not true about leased cars. The RK is the employer!

(There is no issue at all regarding parking tickets - most firms company drivers policies will cover this - usually stating tickets must be paid promptly and any that end up with correspondence will be paid out of wages)

And what about all those changes of keeper to deal with were you telling us the truth??
