A week in Prague - October 2014

Hi all,
Myself, husband and two children (ages 9 and 13) are going to Prague for a city break in October. I had thought about travelling to Auschwitz in Poland whilst there but it costs too much to travel by train. Has anyone done this from Prague (or driven)?
Also looking for ideas and suggestions as where to visit!
Many thanks

No idea about Auschwitz, sorry, but Prague Zoo is an excellent day out. Better than many British zoos, IMO. When we were there, they were building a huge new multimillion pound African enclosure.Egg Loan - [strike]£4921.84[/strike] £0!! :j Barclaycard - £3866.47 Legal + Trade - [strike]£2700.96[/strike] £0!! :j Triton - [strike]£1730.89[/strike] £0!! :j Next - [STRIKE]£776.15[/STRIKE] £126.88 Littlewoods - [strike]£217.16[/strike] £0!! :j Housemate - [strike]£1300[/strike] £0!! :j Capital One - [STRIKE]£1652.51[/STRIKE] £1,081.58 Vanquis - [strike]£2337.75[/strike] £375.58

A whole week in Prague might be pushing it for finding things to do, especially with children so it would be worth splitting the trip with visits to nearby cities. If you look at a map then Prague is pretty much at the centre of the European rail system.
I'm not sure I'd be taking a 9 and 13 year old to Auschwitz. My nephew and niece at those ages and they may be a little too young to fully understand it or find it boring.0 -
I'd love to have gone to the Kutna Hora ossuary which is meant to be fascinating but it seemed a bit of a trek out of season but if you have a week I'm sure this could be easier? The town itself is supposed to lovely and cheaper than the main parts of Prague0

Terezin is in the Czech Republic and there are bus tours which take you there. I agree that it's perhaps not the best trip for young children.
Kunta Hora is also available plus various other excursions out of the city
Martin Tours have kiosks in the centre near Wenscelas Square0 -
Thank you all for your suggestions so far. I've just had a look and can get a train for all four of us return to Dresden in Germany. I thought we could stay there for a couple of days. I know nothing about this though! Has anyone visit there at all?
Yes I had though Aushwicz may not be suitable for the children - it's the husband - he's always wanted to visit there!0 -
You can go to Karlova Vary which was formerly Carlsbad with Martin Tours. It is a spa town and the casino in Casino Royale was filmed there.
Cesky Krumlov is worth an overnight. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. When we lived in Prague for my husband's job, we had a company car so went all over the place! You can also go to Plzen where pilsner lager originated.
Lots to see in Prague itself of course but whether sight seeing is of interest to young kids only you can decide. It is a fabulous compact city and very easy to get around.0 -
If you want to go to Auschvitz you and hubby should do a short break to Krakow, its only 40 minutes from there and Krakow IMO is nicer than Prague
as someone else pointed out Terezin is not far from Prague, it was used as a Ghetto in the war0 -

I also like them both and agree with you, although I have done 6 nights in Krakow and would go back0 -
yes that was the original plan, Prague for a few days, then krakow with a trip to Auschwitz. But the train from Prague to krakow was an overnight sleeper costing 400 euros. This was a lot more than our flights from Edinburgh to Prague.0
