Less than 2 months on gas

Options
Had my central heating converted to gas (combi boiler) less than 2 months ago and I have used 21 kwh already, costing nearly £13 on Ebico.

Looks like this gas lark is going to be one expensive ride.

  • Presumably that's just hot water... Depending on the number of showers etc you have 21kWh is not too bad for two months. I can't speak for the tariff.

Presumably you don't mean kWh but gas units.

With Ebico a kWh costs less than 6 pence.

A gas unit is approx. 11.2kWh if a metric gas meter(cubic metres) or approx. 32kWh if an Imperial meter(cubic feet)

It looks like you have a metric meter and 21 gas units are approx. 235kWh which will be in the region of £13.

Do you consider £13 expensive for two months hot water?
  • Yes sorry I mean 21 gas units, as displayed on the meter dial. The meter is metric as it was installed recently too.

I used to put the immersion heater on for hot water when I wanted it. Not sure if it would have cost £13 in this amount of time. I only used to put it on for what I needed e.g 40 minutes before I wanted a bath etc.

If you have gas central heating, why are you using Ebico?

Much as they are a good company, their prices a high for anyone other than a very low user.

You are confusing cubic metres and kilowatt hours. I have a standard boiler which currently is heating water only. We also use gas for cooking. In August, we used 25.9 cubic metres s or 285Kwhs of gas and we think that we are pretty frugal. The bill with VAT but before discounts came to £19.32 for the month.

I went with Ebico when I had the meter installed so I wasn't paying daily charge before I actually had the boiler installed. Plus with it being summer I didn't need heating on just water. I will probably look again at tariffs for the winter when I start using heating.

Yes I meant 21 gas units as displayed on the meter dial. I don't have a gas cooker so gas is only being used for the boiler.
  • Ok, I assumed you'd done the volume conversion to kWh :D

If you really think this is too much (I don't), start by turning your hot water temperature down to about 45 degrees. Heating water so it is too hot is just a waste of gas.

Just had our quarterly bill and it's £45 and that includes cooking with gas and occasional gas fire use.

    Take shallower baths.

A single bath per day (plus cooking) should use around 20 to 25 kWh per week.
  • Got water dial on boiler on number 3 out of 5. Water is just at the right temp without being too hot that you have to add cold.
