Hi All
Just a rant about my crtitcal illness cover that I have paid into for 17 years.
Recently diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and am told its not covered on my Scottish Equitable policy! AEGON who now own SE do cover it but my policy does not. The joy!
Any similar stories?

The basis of CI is that you must have one of a specified illnesses with the necessary severity level. Different CI policies have different lists of illnesses and severity levels.
Similarly the list of covered conditions also changes over time, whilst Protection is not my area of my expertise I believe that the list of illnesses covered on modern policies are notably longer than it was historically.
Personally I'd put PHI higher up the list of priority to CI but appreciate thats of no benefit to you now0 -
As time has passed, the definition of a condition required to claim may have hardened, but the number of conditions covered has increased.
It's always been a fine line between re-broking for more definitions versus giving up a softer definition which would have made an easier claim if that's what happens.
For example, an older plan may cover any prostate cancer on diagnosis, while a newer one requires a Gleason score of six or higher before you can claim. The newer plan might however cover twenty more conditions than the older one.I am a mortgage broker.
