Investing a fixed sum each month can be a terrible way to invest. If the price goes down, then you’ve made a loss on the units / shares you’ve already bought. If it goes up, then you’re getting less units / shares for your money. Plus, you're not invested for so long, so you get less dividends.

Absolutely true. Sometimes it works & sometimes it doesn’t. Depends on which way the price moves after you’ve started investing.

If it goes up, then yes you’ve made less than you could have, & vice versa. You have also missed out on some dividends. So you are sacrificing some potential gains, for reduced potential losses.

I’ve used it before buying a ftse100 tracker fund, when the market was quite volatile. When I finally sold the investment, I’d made a profit. It wasn’t as much as if I’d timed the market just right, but I was happy with what I’d made.

I wouldn’t bother using it on a less volatile investment, say a bond fund.

I think it’s one of those areas where there is no right or wrong answer. Depends on the investment, your appetite for risk, and then what actually happens after you start investing…
