Kindle Paperwhite vs Kindle

I have a Kindle Fire however looking to trade it in (CEX? or any other suggestions) for either a Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle to take travelling with me.
Whilst I was originally going to get a Kindle, I thought the edition of a back light which is available on the Paperwhite may be useful.
Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

I've seen a lot in the reviews about the backlight on the last but one Paperwhite not giving off an even light (I think it's been fixed for the last edition of the Paperwhite). I suppose it depends on when or where your planning on reading, maybe if it's all daylight or when your in a lit building or on a train you may not need the backlight to read.
Personally? I'd try to visit a Curry's or larger supermarket where they sell these so you can see what they're like before making your mind up. What is "great" for one person may not be so good for someone else and your preferences are no better known than to you alone.0 -
Just seen a Tweet that sez there's a security issue. Someone can offer/sell an e-book with a virus which then hacks your Amazon account.

I have both an original kindle (with keyboard and text to speech) and a paperwhite. I use the original with headphones when doing boring tasks and the paperwhite for reading in bed, because the light is very contained and doesn't disturb OH. I suppose the light might be useful in a dark train or plane?
I've had the paperwhite since they were first released and haven't had any issues with uneven lighting.
I get all my ebooks from Amazon, mainly from the 'free bestsellers' list.
I think kindles are great.[FONT="][FONT="] Fighting the biggest battle of my life.

The lighting on a normal kindle used to make my eyes go funny after a while but I've had my paperwhite since January and love it either in the dark or bright sunlight , highly reccomended by me0

"Update: Mr Mussler told The Independent over email that he believes Amazon has now fixed the flaw."New to this money saving lark. Any tips greatly received.

I don't think the normal Kindle has lighting, no.
Just a note to say that there are mentioning's that there will be a new Kindle released in the next month or so in the US and a month or so later (November) in the EU/UK.

I opted for the Paperwhite over the basic Kindle and I LOVE it. I'm so glad I paid the extra. Reasons:
- Even without using the backlight, the 'paper' is far more white than on the normal Kindle, where it's a bit grey.
- The light comes in very handy when I want to carry on reading when hubby goes to sleep. I can turn the light up a bit and read without my bedside light, but somehow it still doesn't hurt the eyes like a backlit screen (e.g. phone).
- The page turns are much less noticeable. On the normal Kindle, the whole screen goes black for a split-second when you turn the page. This doesn't happen on the Paperwhite. It's a really minor point but it would have bugged me.
- On-screen touch keyboard is MUCH better than just having a trackpad when typing in the Kindle store. On the normal Kindle, you have to scroll to the letter, press it, scroll again... Paperwhite has a smartphone style keyboard.
Some branches of Waterstones have both the Kindle and the Paperwhite so you can have a play with them both.
EDIT: Just seen on Amazon that the new version of the basic Kindle has touch, so ignore my last point.

I upgraded my kindle to the paperwhite in May this year. I dithered for ages but I don't regret my purchase/upgrading one bit. I love the paperwhite and all its extra features, particularly the freetime feature which encourages me to find the time to read more. (Its actually meant to encourage your kids to read more!)
I love having the option of the backlight and also the touch screen aspect is better than the buttons on the side which I have on my old kindle.0 -

Did write this post? I could have done except my original Kindle stopped working just as the first paper white was released, I did get a duffer but they swapped it no problem... I am looking at the new one coming soon ..0
