At my new job we get paid a week in hand and paid every Friday so what does this mean? I haven't had my first payment yet so I'm assuming I'll get paid 2 weeks worth on my first payment.

You work a week, you get paid for it the following week.
You'll only get one weeks pay in your first payment.0 -
You will get paid for your first week at the end of the second week.
You will get paid for your second week at the end of third week.
And so on. One week at a time.0 -
Didn't think that still happend these days.
Getting paid on Thursday or Friday in cash in a little brown envelope with holes in so you could check your money without opening it. Then if you thought it was wrong you take it back and the wage clerk would break the seal.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Getting paid a week in hand doesn't refer to actually getting the cash in your hand. My neughbour gets paid a week in hand, but gets it in his bank account every Friday. The method of payment has changed, but it just that you get paid effectively a week behind.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
SS, the op is inquiring about payment in arrears.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

In hand and in arrears aren't normally the same thing but there's no need for either to involve envelopes of cash.
eg I'm now paid in arrears and get my pay for September on the last day of September. If I was paid a month in hand, I'd be getting my pay for September at the end of October.
Working in hand is more common when everyone works variable hours rather than on a salary as they need some time to work out what you should be paid.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

I never meant in hand like cash in hand it's paid into my bank they just call it a week in hand that's why I was not sure what it meant.0

It just means that you work a week before you get paid0

topaztiger1983 explains it the way I have always interpreted the situation. You get paid at the end of each week.0

In actual fact, you work two weeks before getting paid.
you get paid for the first week at the end of the 2nd week.
When you leave the employment you get 2 weeks wages. The one 'in hand' and the one you have just worked.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
