Another Contactless Card Query

I am a very conservative and occasional user of CCs (apart from the Santander 123 with its cashback options).

My other card expired recently and was replaced with a contactless version. I have yet to register it.

I know that loads of people use contactless cards but I am wary of some stories I remember when they first came out. This was to do with people walking by the owner in the street skimming the odd £20 via contactless transactions.

Is this still a problem? (Was it ever a problem?)
Are there any other pitfalls?
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

  • Even if it were/is a problem, your bank covers you for fraud like this (even if you lose your card, so long as you report it, you're covered). My parents said the same thing, that they didn't want contactless because someone could steal their money. They didn't seem to understand that if someone did steal your money, the bank will just refund it.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

  • I was the same when I first got a contactless card after watching some YouTube videos on details been obtained. Like the previous post says, you're protected if fraud was to occur but if you're really concerned you could also store the card in an RFID protected wallet.

I can't post links but I bought one off of Amazon made by a company called PACSAFE.

There was a similar reaction to chip and pin. There really is no problem if you make sure you report your card loss if it happens.

Alternatively if you live somewhere where the contactless facility doesn't have many outlets (so won't really be useful) or really don't want to risk it, you could ask for a card without the contactless facility.
RBS and First Direct certainly can do this (though you may have to be persistent) and I would guess others will too.

True, but who wants all the bother and hassle of contacting the bank to sort the problem out ?
We are told that the advantage of a contactless card is a speedier transaction when you are paying for goods. Mmm ... about 3 or 4 seconds ?? Wow !! that's a real benefit. Just think of the things you can do with all that extra time saved !!
Personally, (and no doubt many will disagree), but I don't think it's worth it for the increased security risk albeit it small.
First Direct, (excellent customer service), gave me a contactless card, but when I asked them to issue me with a non-contactless one, they gave me one straight away.

I use my VISA contacless card for paying for sandwiches, less hassle with typing PIN. However AMEX contacless doesn't work in many places and I still have to use PIN. I probably have 5-6 contacless cards in my wallet and I understand that they clash with each other.

First time my husband used his contactless card he wasn't issued with a receipt. It was the norm he was told.

'That's all very well' he said 'but how am I supposed to do my accounts? I cant remember what day it is half the time let alone how much I spent in several contactless transactions'.

    I haven't used mine yet.

Surely he should be checking his credit card statements etc?

I prefer to use contactless cards where they are accepted... Somehow I feel much more secure knowing no one is looking over my shoulder to see what my PIN is.

Not only that, now and then you'll be required to enter said PIN to verify you are the card holder.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

But is that why he wants the receipts ? To cross check the credit card statements ?
