Gunjack, many thx for your reply which is really helpful. How do I go about loading it though - do I need to delete/remove the existing version first? Is it wise to do this just in case something then doesn't work with my installation?

don't need to uninstall the existing first :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • Thanks for all the replies.

The reason I need this for work reasons is because I am trying to get underway with work from home (self employed) and the agencies who provide this type of work all seem to make it a minimum requirement in their terms that you have MS Office - some insist on 2013 where others will accept older versions. Otherwise I wouldn't be bothering as Libre Office suits me fine.

HUP comes in when the employer has corporate licensing on Office and its only for employees. If you are self employed then it isnt going to be applicable.

Agencies are unlikely to know much about systems and so will be blindly saying what you need. As has been said, there is very little that cannot be achieved with other software that can be done with Office and as long as you save it as Docx, xlsx etc they will be none the wiser about what you used to create/ edit it

Not trying to disagree (honest :o) but how can anyone tell whether you use M$ Or Libre?

Because documents may not look correct, for one thing.

Have a look at the pairs of images in this story, for instance, showing how LibreOffice displays the same documents differently to MS Office.

Also, because LibreOffice documents may not work in MS Office - for instance see this from the same article:
One Word document that we edited and saved from Writer — having imported it and changed only one word — could no longer be opened in Word afterwards (Word reported a problem with its contents).

Good example of Libre Office screwing things up on a document and this hasn't got any complexity in it
