My email clients (thunderbird and outlook) are having problems in downloading emails from the server to my main PC (they are still downloading after 10 minutes) - My laptop has just downloaded them instantly - Both PC's use identical settings and both have a good wireless signal - has anyone got any idea why ?

Not sure about that .. the ISP is not aware of which computer receives mail. Have you tried the PC at different times of the day? .. thinking here about contention. Are the PC and laptop running through ADSL or WiFi?.
Perhaps try putting the laptop in standby whilst accessing mail to see if any improvements. You can always talk to your Internet provider and see what they come up with.0
