Is it bad for the battery...

to take it out of my laptop for long periods?
I read somewhere that keeping the mains lead connected for long periods with the battery in, is not good for the battery.
I think my battery has been out of my laptop for approx for maybe close to a year.
Any advice on this please?

If you are going to store a laptop battery then you should leave it at around 40% charged, and then bring it out and use it every 3 months or so.
I doubt you have done it any favours leaving it for so long, but the only way to find out is to use it.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

The advice about batteries is very conflicting. I was told to fully charge the battery and then store it. I was also told to keep it in the laptop and run it down every month to increase its life. I do the former and it seems to be the best way.0

'battery'
There are lots of types of battery, which all like to be treated differently, hence the conflicting information about how to treat them!
So, what type of battery are we talking about, it should tell you on the label.
I'll guess Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) but could also be NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride)...0 -
It is a Li-Ion.
I have just popped it into my laptop, it is showing fully charged, but charge going down as I type!

You can try using it till around 15% and then charging it again a few times, but don't hold your breath awaiting a possible recovery.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

I think unless you use them regularly then there is always a chance that they are going to fail sooner0

I've seen them (or rather the charging circuit) forget how much charge they have, so if the charge really is flying down, let it go right down (don't have any important work lying open) and see if it hangs around for ages - if so, it needed a bit of calibrating. If it dies in line with the percentage, it's on the way out.
Li-Ion likes to hang around and not be charged and discharged too many times - but the calibaration reasons above, it's a good idea to do that, say, every few months.0 -
When i bought my daughter a laptop i said dont run it on mains all the time. Every week or so use the battery and let it run down then recharge.
She failed to follow my instructions and now the battery lasts approx 3 minutes from a full charge.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
That's exactly what I did with mine, 3½ years down the line it's now down to about 50% efficiency. I generally average a little over 3 hours, but I can still get 4 hours out of it at a push if I lay off the net a bit.forgotmyname wrote: »dont run it on mains all the time. It gave 8½ hours when new, although I was using the net a lot less then.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

A full charge is giving me around 2-2.30 hours max.
What/how to calibrate please?0
