i just restarted the pc to check, i have a choice of either windows xp media centre edition, or microsoft windows xp professional, i click on the first one.

So perhaps you should take an image of your drive, as we are going to run a clean install once you receive and fit the new RAM.

Acronis True Image gives you a 30 day Trial version. So you can use that to create a backup of your whole drive, to your 1TB drive, in addition to whatever backup that you have made to date.
But perhaps wait until you fit the new RAM before you download it, as with 512MB of RAM, the thing will run like a two legged dog.

The swapping of the Hard Drive is actually a good idea, but more fiddly than fitting RAM and Graphics card.

    Dimension 5150 manual

Made a slight mistake with the memory.

    But this is the correct RAM: 2GB(2x1GB) DDR2-533MHz PC2-4200 Non-ECC Unbuffered CL4 DIMM 1.8V £9.90

You can go in and cancel the first order and order this one. It's the same seller, so it won't be a problem.

It's not a mistake as such, as the other memory is compatible. But the system is designed for the cheaper RAM.

well they have told me the order was sent before they read my message and they have this written in their terms It is your right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. For all the cases except wrong orders (see below) we cover return postage costs. In Case of wrong order a payment of 1.99£ for UK customers and 2.99£ for outside UK customers would be subtracted for postage and Re listing. so not only will i pay return postage they are going to charge me 1.99 for postage and relisting. is this legal?

Yes. If the goods are not faulty then it was your responsibility to check you were ordering the right items.

i understand that i pay the postage to return the item, but the item when i bought it had free postage and the seller will get his listing fee credited back when he resells the item.

Don't worry about it. Just accept the order.
The RAM that you have ordered is fine. The post was only if you saw my post last night. Since they've already sent it out, don't worry about it.
Though I would be surprised if they would charge a restocking fee if they knew that you were ordering another pair.

i think the floppy drive was optional, so no floppy discs. when i did try and do a back up a while ago it did mention putting in a floppy disc, no mention of backing up on to a cd.i thought floppy discs had been replaced by cd's.
i suppose with the memory it will be like putting a ferrari engine into a ford escort.!

You can pick up a floppy disk drive easily enough.
I got mine for about £8 from a local computer shop (and I think I got my leg lifted by quite a lot)..
They're easy enough to fit (it's just two cables).
The issue could be getting hold of blank disks these days.
