Blue Lagoon - Bus

Have time in my schedule to do the Blue Lagoon on Sunday. What's the best way to get there and back from Reykjavik without a hire car? There seem to be a lot of tours, which we want to avoid. Can we get a normal bus there? Want to go later in day to avoid worst of crowds.

We got the local bus from the centre of town.
I would time to be there around lunchtime which is between the morning and afternoon tours. We had the place to ourselves at that time with just a few locals.
As we were coming out the hordes were decending.0
