Moving from Italy to UK. Got a luton hire van; need a cheap crossing

Hi.

A good friend is moving from Italy to the uk, and I've been roped in to help him move.

He us currently residing in the uk, so our plan is to hire a luton box van in the uk, and drive to/from Italy.

All we need is a cheap crossing.

It would be nice if euro tunnel will let us use tesco vouchers, but I don't think they will

Looking to travel from dover/Folkestone 12th NOV. Retuning 16th nov.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Ash

P&O Dover/calais out at 10.15 back at 18.50, assume height 3.7m length 5.9m = £170. Seems about right to me.
You can get cheaper by travelling at unsociable hours, have you actually looked at the ferry websites yourself yet?

Thanks. Yes, I did a few searches. Dfds was showing £210.

Was your price thru p&o website?

Having driven several times to Italy- right down to Puglia (the heel!) we notice that while many Italian motorways are toll-free or cheap, the choice of route through France can result in massively different toll costs.

If you don't already know it, try different route options on 'viamichelin.com' which suggests route options, and calculates distance, time (assuming fast driving without allowance for stops) and crucially, toll costs, including the Swiss tax pass if you go that way. You can tweak the route in the options buttons too ( fastest, toll-free, favour motorways, scenic... etc). Buon viaggo

When you're getting on the ferry in France keep an eye on your wing mirrors incase you get a few extra passengers jumping in.

yes P&O site. I always use them as the sailings are far more frequent than anyone else and you can usually get on an earlier one if you are ahead of schedule, and they are not too fussy about you turning up late if it is moving towards a cheaper time of day.

I couldn't get p&o to give me a quote as they class a luton box van as freight...

No they don't; there is no option in the dropdown menu on the online booking for 'Luton box van' only 'van'. It is done on size alone.
What are the actual height and length of the van you propose to use?
As the website clearly states it must be 6.5 metres or less to classify as non-commercial, hence the figures I used in the sample quote given in post #2. As an example Kendall do a Luton at 5.8m length.

  • try using https://www.directferries.co.uk , it'll show all the operators including Eurotunnel.

You won't get as cheap a crossing with a van as you can sometimes get with cars.
