recommend a cat toy

I have a visiting cat, I have spoken to its owners and they know it comes in my house and are happy for it to do so. I think they are just glad it has somewhere to go as it doesn't go in its own house, they feed it outside.

I want to buy a toy for it as not having a home as such I suspect it never gets to play. It is not my cat so I will only be purchasing one good quality one that hopefully it will enjoy (I also plan to get my own cat again in the future so would use it then as well). The only toys I had for my previous cats were balls and things on string. I have unfortunately thrown all these away :( I was thinking of buying a cat activity centre thing (I have a bit more disposable income at the moment), having never owned one before I am not sure if it will be a waste of money and I would be better off just spending a couple of quid on a new ball??

Can anyone recommend a good activity centre or toy that their cat(s) like. I would guess the cat is around 10 years old..

PS if anyone has any pictures of toy(s) in action it would be lovely to see them :)

  • It depends on the cat. Some cats don't like toys.

Ping pong balls, toilet roll middles, and shoelaces are inexpensive.

At 10 years old it might just prefer to watch telly.

Barnes wasn't sure what do with toys when I got him a year ago, at age 6. his favourite toy is a catnip mouse. he will play with that when on his own or with me. He also likes his 'kickeroo' - he gets that out of his toybox to play with too. and he likes a 'vibrating spider' I got from 'what' - but not when you make it vibrate! he just likes to bat it around and 'rabbit kick' it!
start with a catnip mouse is my advice.
  • Do you want a toy the cat can play with alone, or one that you interact with it?

Cookie never seems to tire of her Flying Frenzy but we do eventually and have to hide it in the utility room where she is not supposed to be allowed. There are videos on the web site.

  • I can personally recommend these:

The duck version is our cat's favourite ... and the neighbour's cat loves it too! I've lost count of the number of times the rascal has sneaked into our house and stolen one (we have at least 4). Sometimes we see him in his own garden playing with it, other times the first we know is when his owner pops it through our letterbox!!

    My cat loves:-
    Ping pong balls
A long piece of string with paper tied to the end
An old piece of carpet wrapped around a large tube
    The fringes on the rug!!
A small cat nip cat that must be at least 7 years old.

Advise, don't go out and buy loads of expensive stuff, as knowing cats, they play with it once then ignore it! try the local car boot for a scratching type post / nest thing.

  • Yeowww catnip toys are good, sturdy and fun for cats - they do shapes like banana, cigar, apple, fish... They're American products, but Amazon UK sells them. You can find 'em elsewhere too:

Here they are in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM_tdvxJNwE :D

They are large toys and properly infused, so great for a catnip-induced kick fest! All the cats I've given them to love them. Just make sure you rotate the toy with a couple of others so that he/she doesn't get bored with the same one.

It's really nice that you're spoiling your kitty-cat visitor! :)
  • I've bought my spoilt cat a fair few toys and these are the ones she has enjoyed the most.

This one she playes with on her own which is the good thing about it, but also I can join in with me batting the ball round to her then she bats it back, she also like to sleep in the middle of it.

IF you get this don't leave the cat unsupervised as they will destroy the feathery bit, also it needs to be stored in a cupboard out of reach - trust me they go crazy for it.

Her favourite free toys are, tin foil made into balls and ribbons.
