Just got my renewal notice through and clearly states £2.50 for paying by credit card.

Does it also "clearly state" that this fee would be payable if renewing at a Post Office counter?...or just online as the OP's renewal notice clearly stated?

My renewal only mentions paying by cheque at the post office. But frankly I am far more concerned about proof that I have paid as I will no longer have a tax disc - I normally renew by phone but I guess I will have to do it at the post office to get proof. I assume they won't be sending out any proof as if they did they may as well send a disc and nothing I have read mentions a receipt being sent.

Still a bit odd that the PO site says a fee 'may' be charged

I would assume that they would email a receipt. You can also check to see if your vehicle is taxed using the below link

  • Surely this wouldn't be legal in line with the new regs that you can only charge what it actually costs you to process the transaction. I.e. a "handling fee" would not be allowed.

No because £2.50 is pretty much what it would cost them anyway. Did you think it would be much less?
  • As regards the question of proof of payment without a tax disc, I renewed from the 1 October on line last Wednesday and received an e-mail confirmation of receipt of payment immediately. Why anyone wants to queue up at the Post Office to do this is beyond me.

Well I haven't checked the website yet this year, but last year my security software said that it was unsafe & I prefer not to put my card details in one of those so paid by phone, that is why I was wondering about a receipt.
