If it was an unexpected death as seems likely there is probably the need for an internal investigation by the prison authorities and maybe the family opted to hold the funeral at the later time to allow for delays eg they were told the body would be released between two and six weeks time and they opted for the longer time to avoid rearranging.

Really though it'd be a case of asking the family if appropriate-and if not appropriate there is just speculation.

took us four weeks in normal circumstances recently.
Simply due to timings not working out.
Funeral directors wasn't available, the crem didn't have slots etc.
No post mortem or anything, straightforward death.

So I would guess it only takes one thing to go wrong and the time could lengthen

So that length of waiting time is not unheard of then?

    Thanks for your response

It was a month for my brother but we had to wait for a PM (plus it was winter so the ground is harder to dig ) however I have known of longer periods han 6 weeks.

tbh I would have thought it was nobody's business apart from the family's. If they want to share the reasons why then all well and good but to ask, imo, would be nosy
  • It's a death in custody.

There will be a post mortem, perhaps even an inquest even if it was unavoidable natural causes.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Forgive me if I appear cagey but I am family.

The family divided into several warring groups many years ago, myself and the deceased abandoned all other members of the family including each other. Due to previous family deaths usually becoming protracted and very expensive I now doubt any information I receive from any member of the family.

As has been mentioned I can only speculate and at first glance the length of time discussed here did seem suspicious. Perhaps it isn't given what others have had to say.

Friend of mine unexpectedly died a few months ago and the funeral was just about 6 weeks later. It was natural causes but it took them a long time to find exactly what - they actually released the body before they had all the results (which took another 3 weeks to arrive)

You can buy a copy of the death certificate which will give cause of death - maybe meaningfully, maybe not.

If he died in prison, maybe he had to serve the rest of his sentence before being released.

In that case, he may well get out early for good behaviour.

(Sorry, Op, not intending to offend)
