Ex Soldier with War Pension

  • Many benefits staff have never come across a war pension so probably would have no idea about any local disregard and would have no idea how to interpret any pension slip or pension letter. You have to point out to them what it is and ask if your local council has a local disregard scheme. If the staff member says no ask them to check with a manager. I would be very surprised if they don't.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
  • Cheers guys the info has been invaluable, I have been to the council today and picked up a claim form, all I can do is fill it out and see what happens this time.

I will endeavor to find out the LA's stance on war pensions in the meantime.

With regard British Legion and SSAFA, as great as they are, they do very little in my circumstances and will only assist if I am in arrears of rent etc, so I have to put myself in debt first and be threatened with eviction etc before they look into things.

I am a member of the Band of Brothers which is an organisation set up by Help for Heroes for wounded, injured and sick personnel and I approach them for assistance rather than SSAFA and RBL as their procedures etc are quite archaic and can take some time, but I shouldn't have to keep relying on the charity to help so I'm hoping this time round I am legible to receive assistance from the council.

    My fingers are crossed........
  • Hi just wondered if you had any update on your situation as I'm having the same problem with my partners war pension?

    Thanks
