Sterling savings account for British citizen living in Malawi

I have a friend who is British but lives in Malawi. She wants to save some money in a sterling denominated account but UK banks are unwilling to allow her to open an account because she didn't have a UK address. Her sister would be happy to accept all correspondence, but what the banks really need are utility bills in her name.

She is not a UK taxpayer.

I've run out of ideas. Is there any hope for her to get a sterling account with a UK bank?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Comments

  • Several UK banks will accept non-resident customers but the big High Street names tend not to be amongst them. She should try some different ones.

Another option is the offshore banks/building society branches, all of which do savings accounts and all of which will accept her.
