Washing Machine Breakdown

I am sure this has been asked probably many times before but I am so cross right now I need to vent.
My washing machine has today stopped working ... it was purchased 12 months and 15 days ago from Argos who want nothing to do with it and told me to phone the manufacturer as it has 5 year parts warranty on it but that would mean paying for labour.... I said I felt a washing machine should last longer than said amount of time and I should not have to pay, she then said I would have to get an independent report saying it is faulty and they would refund the charge.
Where exactly do I stand on this..... it seems either way I have to pay out for something that should still be working

Argos are completely correct.
You can go and speak to the manufacturer to see what they can do under the warranty.
Or under the Sales of Goods Act you can get it repaired, refunded or replaced (seller's discretion) up to 6 years after purchase from Argos. After 6 months YOU will need to show that the item was not as described (not the case), not fit for purpose (not the case) or inherently faulty. You do this by getting a fault report which shows this, and should it be inherently faulty then you'll qualify for a refund of the report costs plus a resolution. Of course if you have been negligent with your washing machine then you have to be aware that you might not be entitled to any resolution (and you'll be out of pocket for the report too) so bear that in mind before going ahead0 -
Argos are correct here.
What you actually need is a report stating that the machine is faulty and that the fault is due to a manufacturing defect. (The SOGA refers to it as an inherent fault which means that the fault was there at the time of purchase but has only just manifested itself).
Without this report there is no way for Argos to know if the fault is due to something that you or a member of your family have done such as overloading it.0 -
So can I use any engineer to look at the machine and state the problem? .... I know I have done nothing to cause the fault which appears to be electrical and I will be pursuing it.0

Have you checked fuse in plug?0

All modern cold fill washers have a 13 amp fuse . That blowing signifies some other problem. Just replacing could do further damage !0 -
display was flashing oddly last night then it just wouldn't turn on this morning... checked fuse and tried it in another socket0

Just stating the problem won't be enough. They'll need to provide a written report, that you can send a copy of to Argos. This is likely to cost you, but you can claim the cost back from Argos.0
