Home/Contents renewal - suggestions/companies to avoid

I about to renew my buildings and contents insurance and have spent the last week or so doing comparison quotes. They range from around £96 up to about £450.
I'm comparing policies and making sure that the cover offered is what I wish it to be. I've checked the Which table and looked for reviews for each of the companies I've had quotes from after looking at Martin's suggestions for getting quotes.
So many of the "popular" companies seem to have bad reviews when it comes to making a claim.
Also I don't want to end up paying £450 for a company with a good review when another one with a good review is £188. But I don't want to pay a very low price and then find out that I've chosen a company whose customer service is rubbish.
Hopefully I wont have to claim but want to deal with a company who have a good reputation if I ever need to.
Any recommendations/warnings from anyone with experience?
