In principle, he may be able to claim ESA.
He would need a note from his doctor that he should not work, or that he is not fully fit.
If he has worked as an employed earner in the last two complete tax years before this year - so 2011/12 and 12/13, then he should be entitled toc ontributory ESA.
For 13 weeks or so (perhaps longer) he will be entitled to the assessment rate.
This is ~75 pounds a week.
Then after the assessment - if he passes - another 25 or 30 pounds.
If he is entitled to contribution based ESA - household income or savings don't matter.0
