I've just had a brilliant time dyeing stuff. It started with two pale grey hand towels, too grubby for the charity shop. Decided it was more environmentally friendly to dye them navy to match new bathroom decor and at the last minute threw in a very faded navy summer dress. The results were awesome! I still can't get over the dress. After that I dyed a whole lot of faded stuff, dressing gown I was almost going to replace because it was so shabby, tee shirts, another navy towel, navy trousers, even socks! Because the stuff was navy already, I used one packet of Dylon machine dye (the stuff you add salt to) for a whole load and it worked very well. You have to wash everything first (without fabric conditioner, I assumed) and then dye with a 40% wash but no detergent. When that's done, you add detergent (and I popped in the odd navy thing which needed a wash anyway) and do another 40% wash. After that you can gloat over your 'new' stuff! You're supposed to run the machine on empty with another 40% wash after that, but I had a whole load of painting cloths to wash so after wiping the door seal with kitchen paper, I washed them. In fact they didn't pick up any surpus dye and I've had no subsequent problems with normal washes afterwards. I plan to be careful about washing these newly dyed things with pale colours for the first few times, though people on the web seem not to have problems with colour run, so I am probably just being very cautious.

I recently dyed a faded light grey jacket "antique grey". It has come out a slightly grey / green colour with purple stitching. It is fab but not what i was expecting.:D
I wanna be in the room where it happens
