I have a jacket (blazer) that I love, but its black and after the amount of washes its had, it's faded.
What's the best way to dye it back to black?

Dylon washing machine dye is great for cotton items, I have re-dyed faded black t-shirts with great results.0

Thank you so so much
I had a quick look and it says I also need to buy a pre-dye
Is that right?! I have a faded black jacket that I want to re-dye black (Is a pre-dye REALLY necessary?)0 -
I've never used a pre-dye. I certainly wouldn't do it to refresh a colour. I'd only use it to change a colour. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I re-dyed a pair of very faded black jeans - they came out great, gave them a new lease of life. Didn't use a pre-dye, I think that's unnecessary if you've considered what mixing the old + new colour will do.
IF your jacket is 100% cotton and machine washable, I would imagine a black machine dye would do a grand job of dying it. You get quite clear instructions inside a packet of dylon. If it's 50% or more cotton or other natural fibres - again it should come out pretty well. Less than 50% tbh I don't think I would bother.
You can get dye for man-made fabrics, but the only one I've ever used was for boiling on the stove - did a nice job, but probably would wreck a jacket.0 -
I use the Dylon machine dyes all the time - they're very straightforward. I use them mostly on sale/ CS bargains which are a good shape but in colours (usually white or pastels) which do not suit me at all. It takes the equivalent of 3 full-cycle 40 degree washes time wise, but I've yet to have a problem with it.
The dye costs about a fiver, but can sometimes be found cheaper in places like B&M or Home Bargains if you go hunting.Surviving the ups and downs of life with DH

Sorry to hijack your thread, but does anyone have any experience of restoring something that has had an accident with bleach? I used a dylon handwash packet to restore a black work top of my husbands but sadly the bleached spots have only come back to grey so far ( after 2 attempts). We have some chocolate Egyptian cotton bedding that I love, and was a small fortune, but it has discoloured, and I'd like to get it right this time. TIA0

Cotton should dye fab so long as you use enough dye, salt and don't overload the machine.0
