JSA Stopped need advice please

Hi my JSA benefit has been stopped because I have taken a small part time job that pays £6.31 per hour and I only get around 7 hours per week. I earn about £44 per week which is less then JSA.

The job center sent me a letter asking for pay slips but as this is self employed I don't have access to one, my boss is also self employed so he is unable to send me any and has been no help. I was recommend to send bank statements instead by the job center. I sent them off in August the 26th and they are stating they have not received them.

My income is far to low to live on please help need advice.
I have resent a new statement and they received it but still have not payed me anything, instead they just sent the same letter I first received making a endless loop.

Please Help in great need of advice.

Is it safe to give the job up , as i wish I never took it ? thank you.

    Have you registered as self-employed?

And have you applied for HB and CTB if these are required?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • If you have a 'boss' (rather than a client/many clients) it sounds as if you are employed, not self-employed.

The boss tells me I'm self employed but his also self employed, I told the job center this and they said get the wage slips, the boss wont give none because he said that I'm self employed and have to do my own tax and ni and he cant do wage slips.

The lady at the job center did the self employed form thing for me, but i think there is some sort of confusion going on.

What kind of work are you doing? Do you invoice him for your work?

Self employed people do not have bosses. You have clients....you've just been asked about that in the reply before this one and you still use the word boss. In my opinion you are employed and should be getting some sort of pay slip. He can do wage slips. He writes a letter/statement each week stating how many hours you worked, your hourly rate and how much tax and NI he deducted and your net pay. It can even be handwritten if he doesn't have a computer to type it on. On the numbers of hours you are doing you won't have much tax/NI to pay if anything.

  • He says he cant do them, I have asked a a few times.
He tells me I'm self empolyed and have to sort my own ni and tax, which because I earn so low the lady at the job center said I dont need to.

The job center advised me to send bank statments as he refuses to give a pay slip, which I did but they pertend not to have recived them twice now.

Well, since you are self employed you are able to take a couple of hours off and take your bank statements to the Job Centre. Get a receipt from JC saying that they have photocopied them and keep it somewhere safe as this is your proof that you have provided them.

I have to agree that it sounds as if you are an employee but, hey ho, you may not want to make a big deal out of it for fear of losing your job.

Sorry, you don't even need to take a couple of hours off - you are only part time.

Can you not make an appointment at the job centre and take the bank statements in by hand. I would have thought they would copy them for you and then they can't argue they haven't had them x

Edit - whoops seen that has been suggested! x

As a self employed person you will need to register with the HMRC. You'll need to keep good records of your trading activity. I would highly recommend you get insurance to cover yourself against claims made against you such as public liability insurance at the very least and depending on the work you do you may want to consider adding additional insurance to cover the work that you do. If you provide your own tools then I would get insurance to cover them as well. If you use your own car to do this work then make sure your car insurance is aware you are now using it for your self employment. You may find your expenses will far exceed your income and the work isn't actually worth doing in which case you could decline any further work and go back on JSA.

If you aren't sure of the expenses you can claim as a self employed person you may want to seek advice so you don't get your tax calculation wrong.
