I've decided that I need a big treat/pick me up so I'm going with a group on a skiing holiday to Morzine.
I haven't been for donkeys years - what should I take? Does anyone have any tips for me on:
Where to get the right gear? Rent or buy? Already breaking the bank to pay for the holiday so hoping to get things i can re-use.
What gear to take?
Holiday insurance for this type of holiday?
Flights to Geneva - I'm going in March - book now or nearer the time?
Thanks

First off, ski holidays are fab, especially with a group.
Get insurance NOW, make sure it covers winter sports.
You can buy really good ski thermals from Aldi, they had some on special at our store this week, look for the 100% Merino wool ones, leggings and a long sleeve top. Then you can layer up on top with a mid layer and a fleece top.
A neck tube is also very good, you can pull it up over your mouth on the lifts if you get chilly. I got lots of my gear from Sports Direct too, I go for mittens, with glove liners, and haven't had cold hands yet (I'm a really cold person). Get 3/4 pairs of socks, and you can wash them out in the sink.
You will be able to hire skis, boots and poles in resort and can book them in advance. The most expensive thing will be the ski pass, nothing you can do about that though.
One thing I really would reccomend, get a helmet, and wear it. I go skiing every week at our local dry slope. I wouldn't ever dream of skiing without a helmet. Just think of Michael Schumacker.
I'm sure you'll have a great time.0 -
Thanks Michele! Apparently they give out hats now free when you hire the rest of the kit. I'm a very cold person too so I'll need very warm layers :-)Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!

If it's a one off I'd rent the ski equipment. It'll have had some action, but if you haven't been for years there's no point forking out a fortune, and lugging it out there.
Stuff like waterproofs can be picked up from eBay. Some stuff will only have seen a weeks use, and will happily do another week. You can probably sell it on when you get home. Now is probably a good time to buy, it gets more expensive when the season starts.
As for flights, we've flown London to Geneva the past few years with BA. Flights are around £120, so if you can get them around that price I'd book. They're unlikely to get any cheaper. BA don't surcharge for sports equipment, you get one bag at 23kg. We take our snowboard bags, filled with boards and clothes and check it in as our allowance.
Have fun, we've had some good holidays in Morzine!0
